Dear Family and friends,

It is rare, if ever, I ask for assistance from family and friends. This is, however, a serious need. My sister Margaret (in Belize) experienced an unexpected life change of significant proportion. Margaret is diabetic and after a recent unfortunate injury to her right foot, the big toe was amputated. Unable to stop the progression of her condition, Margaret’s right leg was subsequently amputated above the knee. The second surgery was postponed several times while she remained in the hospital, causing her medical expenses to skyrocket. In Belize, most medical procedures, medications, and additional post-op care must be paid for in advance or at the time of service. In addition, many changes and adjustments to her home are currently in progress to accommodate Margaret’s needs. She is no longer able to adequately utilize her current space with a wheelchair, such as accessing the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. We’re hoping Margaret will be able to receive a prosthetic leg in the future. These and all her needs are out of pocket expenses.

Margaret is of modest means. She is retired and receives a small pension from the Belize Government. She is struggling to adjust to her new life. We know she has a long road ahead.
