Manuel “Casper” Tijerina passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026, in Indio, California, after a tragic train accident that took his life. His passing has left a deep emptiness in the hearts of his loved ones.
Manuel is deeply grieved by his mother, Maria Antonia, his father, Desiderio Tijerina, his seven brothers, and his two sisters. He had no life insurance and no savings, and our family is now facing the painful reality of covering funeral and memorial expenses on our own.
Manuel was a kind soul with a big corazón and a generous spirit. He truly lived like a “Cancer” loving, protective, and full of care for the people around him. He was known as “Casper” because, like the original cartoon character, he was friendly, warm, and always willing to help. If someone needed a meal, he would feed them. If someone needed the shirt off his back, he would give it.
Manuel was a mechanic and loved to tinker with electronics. He could take things apart and bring them back to life. He was also a sharp dresser who took pride in his appearance, spending hours ironing his clothes, shining his shoes, and getting that perfect feather for his fedora. He carried himself with style, respeto, and pride.
For years, Manuel worked with Armando “Mando” Martinez, who traveled from Los Angeles every Tuesday night to the Fantasy Springs Swap Meet. Manuel sold jackets with Iron-On Old English lettering, 45 RPM records, cassettes, compact discs, albums, and much more. He loved the work, loved the people, and loved the energy of the swap meet.
Manuel was also a great driver who knew the road instinctively and could drive all night without ever falling asleep. He enjoyed talking with strangers, making friends, and connecting with people wherever he went. He was a Brown Beret who cared deeply about history, culture, and standing up for the oppressed.
At one time, Manuel owned a 1964 Chevy Impalaand a 1973 El Camino, both of which he loved dearly. In his generosity, he gave both of them away. He also lived with asthma his whole life, but he never complained. He never stole, never harmed anyone, and never carried hate in his heart.
Manuel’s loss is a tragedy for all of us who truly knew him. He was a real one, siempre loyal, siempre humilde, and always giving. He helped everyone, and left a lasting mark on every life he touched.
We are asking for help to cover funeral costs, memorial expenses, and other urgent needs during this difficult time. Any donation, no matter the amount, will help our family honor Manuel’s memory and lay him to rest with dignity.
If you are unable to give, please share this page and keep Manuel and the familia in your prayers.

Manuel was my brother in law. I have created this for my mother in law, Maria Antonia Tijerina, who is the beneficiary.
