Support for Mama Sophie

Sophie is proof that animal rescues save lives.

On April 13, after a difficult labor and surgery, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Now she needs help paying her medical bills.

But her story begins well before her daughter was born. 

Sophie was picked up as a stray in Louisiana. In her first checkup, we discovered she has a poorly healed broken femur, as well as heartworm. Heartworm is treatable, but treatment can be expensive and complicated. But Heavenly Angels Animal Rescue said yes.

In March, Sophie was transported to a foster in Brooklyn and the rescue began to work on a heartworm treatment schedule. However, before the medication could be started, we discovered that Sophie was pregnant!

Sophie moved to a new foster in New Jersey. Despite her background as a stray, her physical conditions, and her life upheavals, she is a sweet, charming, low key dog. 

After a difficult early labor, Sophie began to give birth early on April 13. But her first baby was stillborn, breech, and stuck in place. She was rushed to an emergency vet, where we discovered that she also has a poorly healed broken pelvis that would prevent her from naturally birthing any surviving puppies. Most likely, she was hit by a car when younger and has been doing her absolute best with crooked bones since then.

Her surgery revealed that her heartworm is more advanced than expected, but it also resulted in a healthy baby girl who is expected to thrive!

If Sophie had stayed a stray in Louisiana, giving birth could easily have led to a long, painful death. And if it didn't, the heartworm surely would.

She and her baby now both have the chance to enjoy long lives in loving adoptive homes.
