Six years ago, I began working as a volunteer with an immigrant family in Portland, Maine, who had recently arrived from Africa. They came to the U.S. seeking asylum after the father was jailed and tortured in his home country for political reasons. Arriving in Maine with very little money and speaking almost no English, they faced many challenges. My initial work as their mentor was to help them navigate an unfamiliar country and culture. Over the years, they have learned English, worked hard, and bought a house in Lewiston, Maine, where they are raising their children, ages 11 months to 12 years.
Last August, the father was arrested by ICE and is now being held at a federal prison in New Hampshire. Despite having no criminal record, an immigration judge recently ordered him removed from the U.S. If he is sent back to his home country, he will most likely be jailed and possibly killed.
With the father in jail, the family’s main breadwinner is unable to earn a living, leaving the entire family vulnerable. The family is now facing thousands of dollars in legal expenses, as well as the ongoing cost of keeping mom and the kids fed, healthy, and warm during the cold Maine winter.
I started this fund to support the family as they face the consequences of our cruel immigration system. The fund will pay for the father’s legal defense as he appeals the removal order, and help with the family’s living expenses.
Dozens of friends and community members have already contributed, and I hope you will consider joining them. Your support will help sustain this family at a time of increased ICE presence in their community.
