On December 22nd, 2022, my daughter Molly (Tallman) Connery, and her husband, Brian, were devastated to learn that their 7-month-old daughter Madison (Maddie) was living with multiple heart defects, which required open-heart surgery at Boston Children's Hospital. Madison was diagnosed with an Inferior Sinus Venosus Atrial Septal Defect, and a deviated Septum, resulting in her pulmonary veins pumping oxygenated blood into the wrong side of her heart, creating 4x the pressure in her heart compared to a “normal” functioning child.

Maddie underwent open-heart surgery on 1/12/2023, and is currently recuperating in the Cardiac ICU. Her recovery is progressing as expected and will hopefully be transitioned to an Acute Care Cardiac Unit over the weekend.

Maddie’s journey to recovery has been long and stressful for the family. Her admission to Boston Children’s Hospital was her 5th admission in 6 weeks. Unfortunately, no in-network ambulance providers were able to transport Maddie the 2 hour-drive to Boston and as a result, a large out-of-network bill was incurred by family. Maddie has required specialized treatments that were also not covered in-network, presenting the family with very expensive medical bills. Additionally, loss of wages and long-term care have added expenses that put the family in a very fragile financial situation.
