Lyra is my 6-year-old niece, and our family is facing an incredibly difficult time. About two weeks ago, Lyra developed a urinary tract infection that wouldn’t go away. When my sister Shawna brought her back to the ER, doctors discovered a mass on her kidney and immediately sent her to Albany MED. There, they found more masses in her lungs, kidney, and throughout her body. The doctors believe it is Wilms stage four cancer, and the next steps are uncertain. The family is consulting a specialist in NYC to see if surgery is possible, and if not, Lyra will begin aggressive chemotherapy in hopes of shrinking the tumors enough to operate.

Shawna, Lyra’s mom, has two other young children—ages 5 and 9 months old. She is completely unable to work right now, as she needs to be with Lyra during treatment, while her other two children are at home with their stepdad. The emotional and financial strain is overwhelming, and the family is doing everything they can to support Lyra through this fight.
