Support for Luke: A Brave Fight with Ewing's Sarcoma

Hello, our names are Erin Dawson and Tracey Dawson and on behalf of our amazing nephew Luke Kohls and his family, we are raising funds and awareness for Luke and his fight with Ewing's Sarcoma.

In August 2022, our beloved nephew Luke’s world changed forever when he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. At just 15, Luke showed strength and courage far beyond his years. He endured 6 rounds of grueling chemotherapy and underwent a 16-hour bone graft surgery in a courageous effort to save his limb, followed by another 8 rounds of chemotherapy—an ordeal no child should ever have to face. Post surgery Luke was non-weight bearing for over 6 months. Luke continued to go to school when not in treatment and tried the best he could to maintain a “normal” teenage life.

For a time, there was hope. Luke’s determination never wavered, and his love for life—and especially for hockey—kept his spirits high. A passionate hockey player Luke could often be found on the ice, giving his all, or cheering on his favorite team with heart and fire. Hockey is not just a sport for Luke—it is his passion, his community, and a huge part of who he is. Luke is no longer able to play hockey, due to broken screws in his leg. However, golf has become a serious game for him.

In April 2024, our hearts broke when we learned that Luke’s cancer had returned. This time, the diagnosis is terminal. In July 2024, Luke underwent 5 rounds of radiation on 4 new lesions and started palliative chemotherapy. He continued to go to school everyday and played hockey for the first time in 2 years while undergoing this treatment.

Luke is now facing the hardest chapter of his journey. He is surrounded by his loving parents, Shelby and Scott, and his older brother Jack. Their family has shown incredible strength, grace, and resilience in the face of unimaginable challenges.

Shelby is active in the community—known for her compassion, generosity, and tireless dedication to others. She has been recognized by the boys’ hockey association, and her impact on countless families through her selfless service is immeasurable.

Scott has been a steady and devoted father every step of the way—supporting Luke through every hospital visit, every hockey game, always preparing delicious meals and now, through the most difficult fight of all. Jack has been a fabulous older brother and is always there for Luke. Together, Shelby and Scott have given everything they have to support their boys and create as much light as possible in the darkest of times.

Now, it is our turn to give back to this incredible family during their time of need.

Luke is more than a diagnosis. He is a son, a brother, a grandson, cousin, friend, a teammate, and a true warrior. His courage, his love for the game, and his quiet strength continue to inspire everyone who knows him. We want to honor his story and ensure that in every moment ahead, he feels the love and support of the community that surrounds him.
