Recently our daughter Lily (10yrs old) suddenly became very sick, she spent a week in the hospital and had to stay even longer due to an accidental overdose of medication given while in the hospital that was missed by many levels of people in charge of approving the Med & dose at he hospital and it set her back into a deeper DKA state. This disease came out of nowhere, we’re told it is common for it to suddenly strike out of no where in kids her age.
At first, we thought she was having a wide variation of illness like allergies to anxiety to colds and flu symptoms, extreme weight loss that was also mistaken for a growth spurt bc she had also shot up several inches within a very short period of time. We were on the phone for several days with nurses and trying to get her in to see a doctor. When suddenly she was sleeping a lot, breathing a very scary pattern, again Ì assumed she was fighting a fever, also her body temperature was high & then she was cold then back up again.
- It wasn’t until she suddenly started becoming very confused, jumping out and of bed and forgetting what she was doing, trying to use toilet paper as a hair tie, and that turn into confusion, it happened so quickly, Ì rushed her to the ER, her body temp dropped below 93°f. From there she was transported to OSHU NICU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
This has been a life-changing situation for Lily and our whole family. She now needs to take insulin 4 times a day 1 after every meal, plus a 24-hour dose., We are all adjusting to this new routine. Lily especially is having a hard time with this huge life change. There are many new expenses we’re all learning about.
We have medical bills, to supplies for her diabetes care, emergency items for her to-go bag, and the costs of upcoming doctor visits. I have also had to miss work to be with her during this time, which has added to our financial stress. And will have to continue to miss work until everyone who takes care and Lily is able to take care of her confidently & safely, so she does not end up back in the hospital fighting for her life again.
