Our story started in West Virginia. My son Lennon received an autism diagnosis in Kindergarten, but it was apparent even before pre-school that he was never going to just “blend in” with peers. This played out over 8 years and ended with me battling all the way to the State to FORCE them to educate my son, but the truth was they did not have the resources or even the desire to try. This last December, I started digging again for a better solution. I found that in Pennsylvania there were specialized schools for kids like Lennon. So I found a rental home, spoke in depth with the school district in PA and, sight unseen, moved us to PA! I am currently trying to secure affordable housing, because the rental costs over 70% of my total monthly income. I have hired an attorney to assist me with an appeal to the SSA for benefits. I have contacted the IDD/Waiver people in my area and got that ball rolling as well. The schools here have been amazing, however, he needs more than they can provide. He is currently covered under Medicaid insurance which also limits what resources are available. I have applied for financial assistance, but because I have a full-time job (I make 17.50/hr. No child support) I was told my income was too high. So I have lots of balls up in the air but I am quite literally hanging on for dear life. Last month, Lennon was hospitalized at Belmont Pines in Youngstown, causing me to miss work and the consequence was missing my rent payment that pay. My landlord is a saint but it’s also not his problem. I just need a little breathing room where every day isn't literally life or death. If what you have to offer me is experience or advice, I will GLADLY accept either! Parenting a child like Lennon is really one of the most isolating and lonely experiences. Donations will help with housing, legal fees, and provide Lennon with access to equine therapy, which he is interested in. This support will give us stability and new opportunities. I welcome any support—donations, advice, or sharing our story. Every bit of help makes a difference for us.
