As many of you know, I took a trip recently to California. It was not a trip I was excited to take. I hadn't shared the reason because the outcome completely broke me. Mentally, emotionally and the peak of this nightmare my family and I have been experiencing over the past year. My son, Louie, was sentenced to the maximum 10 years in federal prison. My son is 23. His crime was non-violent, he had no criminal history and involved no drugs. He was convicted of conspiracy to transport aliens, reuniting families. The current political climate kept me from sharing, because I feared the backlash. But after so much research, I will not allow fear to keep me from advocating and fighting for a fair sentence for my son. I have always taught my children right from wrong and that actions have consequences. Yes, my son must serve time for breaking the law, but he also must be punished fairly under the law. Lack of effective counsel, lack of understanding of the legal proceedings have led to a lengthy sentence. The criminal justice system has systemic flaws that disproportionately punish the poor and reward the rich. What I've researched so far is appalling. I've never had to deal with the criminal justice system until now. As a mother, I feel compelled to help my son fight for a reduction in sentencing. My family and I have spent close to 10k on supporting my son. That is why I come before you, my friends and extended family, humbly asking for your support. With your support, we can appeal the sentence and get a lower sentence. I don't want the reason my son can't appeal to be because we are not wealthy and don't have 30-50k for an attorney. Every dollar gifted will go towards legal fees. If you are unable to, I ask that you please share and if you pray, please pray for my son and those who are unfairly punished and incarcerated.
