My name is Emma — Leah’s daughter and Deirdre’s granddaughter — the third generation behind two resilient, extraordinary women who need our support.

Late last night, my mother and grandmother experienced a devastating house fire. My mother woke to thick smoke and flames and, by some miracle, was able to get my Nana and our puppers, Riley, out safely. Tragically, their beloved cat, Kitty Ku — who wandered into their lives 12 years ago and never left — did not make it out. We are truly heartbroken by this loss.

There was no time to save personal items, clothing, photos, shoes, or anything meaningful from inside the home. They are now displaced and will be for the foreseeable future. We’re still unsure what can be salvaged. What we do know is that the loss is significant, and the road ahead will require help — for essentials, for replacing what was lost, and for eventually rebuilding their home.

This home has been the one constant place of comfort for my entire life. I've moved countless times over the years, but this house has always been a true refuge. A safe place. It was my mother’s childhood home. It was where we said our final goodbyes to my Papa, where he took his last rest. The smell of fresh bread will always take me straight back to my Nana’s kitchen in the early morning. It’s impossible to put into words what this home meant to all of us.

But the two most important parts of that home made it out. My mother. My Nana. My best friends. Any warmth, comfort, or energy that home ever held existed because of them. So while the loss is enormous and difficult to grasp, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude that they are still here.
