It started in March of 2020 Lauren woke up from sleep with pain in her stomach and blood everywhere. She was rushed to the hospital which is an hour and a half away from her house at the beach thinking she had a miscarriage. She was told that she had a placenta abruption and a sub chorionic hematoma that covered the entire placenta and her baby might not make it and that there was nothing they could do because she wasn’t 20 weeks quite yet.
She was placed on bed rest and was told to walk around her house when she could for exercise. As the hematoma would continue to grow and rupture she was told to move in with her family up north who lived closer to Christiana hospital for proper care. While six month pregnant she woke to having severe pain in her upper leg so bad to the point she couldn’t put any pressure on it and was very dizzy. She was rushed to Christiana hospital and was told that she had a very large DVT (Blood clot) in her groin, thigh and hip. She was sent home with 60mg of lovenox shots (blood thinners) twice a day. She knew something else was wrong because she was still dizzy and fainted three times that weekend. She went back to the hospital the next day and was given a CT where they discovered she had suffered from a Sub Massive Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism and was given a 21% survival rate.
They started preparing her for an emergency C section at six months pregnant thinking she wont make it but the baby might. After days went by in the SICU and she was still alive they sent her to the maternity wing for monitoring. After two weeks she was able to go home with 90mg of Lovenox shots twice a day. In August she was rushed back to the hospital for severe chest pain and loss of color along with dizzy spells again. Once she was being examined she passed out and coded Blue. She was brought back and again sent up to SICU in case she didn’t make it and they needed to take the baby. Once in surgery center they were taking blood and she coded Blue for the second time. Again she came back. The hospital determined that she most likely had micro embolisms built up around her heart that were passing through causing her to slip away.
She stayed at the hospital for another two weeks and continued to stay in and out of the hospital due to chronic chest pain. She was induced a month early due to the heavy blood thinners. She was informed by her hematologist to go off of blood thinners after six weeks and did not check her dvt prior to removing the blood thinners. Against Lauren’s better judgement and several concerned phone calls she stopped taking the lovenox. Three weeks later she was sent to an ultrasound at her request and found that the dvt was still very active and had to be put back on the lovenox shots immediately. They also found embolisms in her iliac veins near her stomach region that were heading up again to her heart. After this was found she began seeing a vascular specialist who diagnosed her with May-Thurners Syndrome and Early Onset Chronic Vascular Disease. She was informed that if she didn’t get surgery soon she would end up in a wheel chair within a couple of years.
Lauren was set to get surgery on January 7th 2021 however, her surgery was cancelled due to testing positive for COVID on January 4th. After she tested positive for COVID she was rushed to the hospital again because she had extreme pain in both her legs and couldn’t walk. She spent another week in the hospital and was diagnosed with a condition called CIDP which is very similar to MS it just doesn’t attack her brain or spinal cord. Since her week in the hospital she’s had multiple problems with her insurance company and chronic pain drs. The insurance company only covers so much of the testing, labs and treatment.
Her fiancé Seth had to take a leave of absence from work in order to help care for her and the kids. When Lauren loses the use of her legs, her arms start to go as well until the medication kicks back in which can take up to a couple of hours. On February 5th, Lauren lost full functions of her legs and couldn’t get them back after using her medication and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Her CIDP is getting worse and is set to peak within the next four weeks. As of right now she’s received large doses of steroids, lumbar puncture and EMG. A lot of the labs and testing isn’t covered by her insurance and she will have to pay out of pocket. After her CIDP peaks the flare up should go down and she can return to a semi normal life and receive the surgery for her May-Thurners disease.
