Support for Laura Sosh-Lightsy: Standing Up for Justice

On September 10, 2025, Laura Sosh-Lightsy was abruptly fired from her position at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) following personal Facebook posts expressing her opinion about a public figure. Laura served as the Associate Dean of Student Care and Conduct and was employed by MTSU for 21 years. Regardless of where anyone stands politically, this situation has raised deep concerns about free expression and fairness in the workplace.

The same night Laura made the Facebook posts, screenshots were circulated on X, formerly known as Twitter, by U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), demanding Laura’s termination from the school. SIX MINUTES later, Laura received a phone call from MTSU President Sidney McPhee’s executive assistant and an hour later, she was fired.

Laura has dedicated her career to higher education — to creating thoughtful dialogue, supporting students, and upholding the values of learning and open discussion. These values are essential to both education and democracy. Now, after being unexpectedly terminated, she is facing a sudden and difficult financial hardship.

MTSU terminated Laura publicly and loudly, in a way that was intended to harm her professional reputation. Others then also “doxxed” her by putting out on social media her home address, including a picture of her house. As a result, Laura received dozens of harassing and threatening messages, including a death threat. She has also applied for dozens of jobs without success. After decades dedicated to students and higher education, Laura is at risk of losing her home and the life she worked so hard to build for herself and her family.

This fundraiser is being organized to help Laura with living expenses as she navigates this challenging time and explores her options for legal and professional recourse. Losing a job is hard enough; losing it for speaking one’s mind — off the clock, on personal time — is something no one should have to endure alone.

If you know Laura, you know her integrity, compassion, and courage. She’s the kind of person who stands up for what she believes in and supports others to do the same. Now, she needs our support in return.

Every contribution — no matter the size — will help Laura stay on her feet as she works to rebuild and stand for what she believes is right. Thank you for helping her through this time with your kindness, encouragement, and solidarity. If you have employment leads, please click the contact button below. Any and all support is appreciated!
