Sheryl has always been the kind of person who puts others before herself. As a single mother, she raised her three children alone from the time her youngest was just six months old. Even when money was tight, she found ways to help others, like sending birthday gifts to nieces and nephews, making sure her kids and grandkids felt special on every holiday, and always offering a helping hand to those in need. She would never ask for help for herself, but now she’s facing a challenge that no one should have to face alone.

About a year ago, she began experiencing troubling symptoms. Despite seeing multiple doctors, including specialists, she was misdiagnosed several times. It wasn’t until January, after her symptoms worsened, that she was urgently referred for a colonoscopy and diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. Since then, she has been receiving treatment at MSK in Manhattan, staying with Krystiana and her family in New Jersey, and relying on her daughter for support and transportation to appointments. The financial strain has been overwhelming. She was laid off in November and is still waiting for SSDI approval, leaving her without a steady income.

Reaching out for help is not easy for our family. We’ve always tried to manage on our own, but this journey has shown us that sometimes, it’s okay to lean on others.
