Kevin McKenzie, a beloved friend and longtime Austinite, was recently diagnosed with a Stage IV glioblastoma brain tumor. What initially felt overwhelming has taken a hopeful turn.
After being told his tumor was inoperable due to its deep location, one of Kevin’s best friends, Dr. Jon, helped get his case in front of two world-renowned specialists at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Henry Friedman and neurosurgeon Dr. Allan Friedman determined that the tumor can, in fact, be surgically removed. Kevin is scheduled for surgery on May 7, following pre-op on May 5.
This opportunity is especially critical, as Kevin’s tumor is unmethylated, meaning it does not respond as effectively to standard radiation and chemotherapy. While surgery will not eliminate all cancer cells, it is expected to improve both his survival and quality of life, and open the door to additional clinical trial options.
At this time, Kevin is unable to work, and Rhonda’s focus is on supporting him through treatment. This sudden change has created a significant financial burden.
Funds raised will go directly toward medical treatment, travel for care, and essential living expenses. Every contribution, no matter the amount, helps ease this burden and allows Kevin and Rhonda to focus on what matters most.
Kevin remains positive and deeply grateful, often saying he feels like “the luckiest man in the world” because of the incredible support surrounding him. Kev must be the only person on the planet who can think of himself this way while having Stage IV glioblastoma.
Thank you for your kindness, prayers, and support.
