This could be you and your family

I can’t think of a convenient time to deal with a life-threatening illness or injury, but when you’re a young mom of a vibrant 7 year-old little boy, it couldn't be much worse.  My wonderful cousin Kelley is working through her own struggle right now after having a stroke in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Aug 15. Kelley was home with her husband and son - sleeping as any of us would be.  Around midnight she was barely able to tell her husband to call 911 - as something was incredibly wrong. They were rushed by ambulance to Hoag Hospital. After an early and incorrect diagnosis of Bell’s Palsy, the head of Neurology (the neurologist on call) confirmed that Kelley was having a stroke, caused by a “Vertebral Artery Dissection.”  The dissection caused a clot to form in her brain stem, causing her Ischaemic stroke. Although rare, a Vertebral Artery Dissection is one of the most common causes of stroke in people under the age of 50. Because the clot happened in her brain stem, both sides of the body are affected. Her speech gets better daily, but her double vision and hearing loss remain a constant reminder of all she has endured.  Kelley is currently on blood thinners (heparin and coumadin) to help inhibit further growth of the clot.  Every day is it's own, and while the road to recovery is long, there are blessings to be seen daily! This precious stability is due to her incredible treatment, and amazing team, from Hoag. Her team is hoping to move her to the Hoag Acute Rehabilitation Center, which would propel Kelley’s recovery time.  As the doctors continue to say, she is a great candidate to receive such intense treatment! Now we hope that the Insurance company sees the same amazing potential from Hoag - and ARC! With all they have had done, and all that needs to continue to be done, Kelley, Ray and Noah will not only have many medical expenses, but the cost of daily life - post stroke, as well as the loss of a second income, this “New Normal”, will see financial challenges caused by this unforeseen life-threatening experience.  We want to support Kelley and her young family during this very difficult time with prayers, encouragement, and any financial support we can gather so that she can focus on resting and her recovery. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and regardless of your ability to donate funds at this time…. Please remember what Kelley herself has shared with us: “Never Take Anything for Granted”. Through this traumatic experience, Kelley has reminded us to treasure each day we have together, that making breakfast with our kids, driving to work, and sleeping in our own beds are all gifts.   This could be you and your family.
