UPDATE FROM THE GSP (2 P.M., 10/19/24): The Georgia State Patrol has released their preliminary findings from a deadly crash on the eastern side of Gordon County late Friday night.

According to the GSP, on October 18, 2024, at approximately 11:45 p.m., a pickup truck was negotiating a curve on Hwy. 53 in Gordon County. The driver of the pickup failed to maintain the proper lane leaving the roadway. The pickup struck a large rock causing the vehicle to reenter the roadway while overturning.

Three occupants were found to be unrestrained during the crash. Two of the individuals suffered fatal injuries: a 26-year-old female and a 17-year-old male. One 23-year-old male was airlifted to Kennestone with serious injuries. The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRTA) is investigating the crash.

As reported, those killed in the wreck are Brody Hightower, age 17, of Fairmount, and Kayla Crook, age 26, also of Fairmount.

William Cannady, age 23, of Talking Rock, was airlifted with serious injuries.

ORIGINAL-BREAKING: TWO DEAD, ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN OVERNIGHT WRECK NEAR FAIRMOUNT. The Gordon Gazette has learned that a single-vehicle wreck on Hwy. 53 East, east of Pine Hall Brick near the Fairmount Community, resulted in two deaths and one severe injury.

The accident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024. The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation. The Gazette has reached out to the GSP; we will update as additional information is provided.

What we do know is that none of the three occupants, ages 26, 23 and 17, appeared to not be wearing seatbelts and were all ejected from the vehicle. The victim severely injured was transported by Life Force to Kennestone. His condition is unknown at press time.

According to Gordon County Deputy Coroner Christy Nicholson, those deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Brody Hightower and 26-year-old Kayla Crook Wilson, both of Fairmount.
