June 22nd, 2026 in Chico California a soon to be adopted father, Jacob “Cody” Hull, alerted his 7 year old girl that there was a man with a rifle walking into the library as they were getting ready to leave.
He quickly ensured her safety, ran after the 18-year old gunmen, who had been idolizing mass shooters for years and was also holding a .22 shotgun rifle. After being shot in the leg, Cody collapsed on a bench and received a lethal shot to the back of his head. Leaving his domestic life partner, Kaygan, and soon to be 7 year old adopted daughter without the love of their lives, their emotional rock, their sole provider.
Acts such as these are completely unconscionable. Acts such as these scream out the horror it is to have people walking amongst us without the empathy, compassion, love and togetherness that the world and humanity so desperately need.
A cry for action is what this grisly and senseless act of violence calls for.
One to boundlessly love the people in our lives, from our families and friends to the people we walk by on the streets or brush up against in the grocery store. These may not be the people living in our homes and caring for our families but they are our brothers and sisters and they, too, deserve protection.
When we cultivate boundless love for all beings and live a life with the goal of togetherness, we engender deep and powerful meaning of our time on this planet filled with beauty, however brief.
The ripples we all create can be felt for generations. Cody’s ripples will be felt for generations.
He embodied this philosophy, walking with humility despite all the reasons he could have easily dropped his humble spirit. Rather than egocentric grandiosity, he lived with infinite curiosity. He embraced every breath he had and moved with intention in every moment. He was an autodidact, a deep intellectual with soul and an emotionally grounded presence. Someone who masterfully tended the earth and his relationships. He moved through this world with integrity rooted in his being and left behind a potent impact on all of the lives he touched.
The spirit of his generosity carried into his shared life with his 7 year old would be adopted daughter and Kaygan, a sister and partner in life to Cody for over 16 years. He loved them deeply and committed himself to caring for them, forming a deep family bond that they will have for the rest of their lives.
But, really, how can we sum up the essence of someone’s soul in words.
In honor of Cody and his deepest desire to be a caretaker for the earth and the people in his life, let us all band together in support of his 7 year old girl and Kaygan when they need it most.
This could mean calling someone and telling them how much you love them, cooking a meal for a friend who needs it most, smiling at someone in the store, or if possible donating what you can to Cody’s family. No act or donation is too small.
