Aloha, my name is Rodalynn. Born & Raised In this small town called Ka’u.
Our family has been through more than one storm, and we are now facing the reality of not having a safe home to return to.
For a long time, we stayed at my mother’s home. After the previous storm, Kona Low, the house developed a serious black mold problem. We continued dealing with the mold for a very long time it just got worse, but after Hurricane Lala, the damage became much much worse. It spread from down stairs & through the house into the kitchen. The bathroom ceiling partially collapsed, one part of the back siding flew off from the storm. and sections of the roof were damaged. Electric pole fell/ broke . At this point, we can no longer safely return to that home. Especially with 2 young children. My ʻohana and I were forced to move into our “new” unfinished home. Hurricane Lala damaged this home as well. Part of the roof was torn off in both the front and back of the house, leaving our home exposed to the rain. Water began leaking inside. We had to put tarps inside the house and direct the water into buckets just to try to keep the damage under control. Eventually, the leaking reached our bed, forcing us to move into another room.
We are facing expenses and challenges that we simply cannot handle on our own. Roof alone will cost for both homes. Nails, materials. Interior drywall will cost for my moms & paying someone to do the work will cost. We need help making our homes safe again. My mom was planning on moving back to her home after my home was done but i am not having her move back with black mold. All funds would go directly into repairs. Any donation, no matter how small, would mean so much to our ʻohana. Mahalo nui loa to everyone who takes the time to read our story.
