Support for Karl`s Road to Recovery

Hi everyone,

We are organizing a fundraiser on behalf of Karl, my husband and our dad, in order to support his recovery and therapy following a major stroke.

On March 22nd, Karl suffered a stroke in the middle of the night that has left him completely paralyzed on his right side and with severe global aphasia, meaning he has lost a substantial amount of his language abilities. While some progress has been made, he is still unable to communicate effectively, and has been in and out of hospital facilities for 24/7 treatment over the past several months.

Recently on June 27th, Karl successfully underwent a cranioplasty procedure to restore a portion of the skull that was removed to save his life in March, and is continuing intense daily rehab once again to attempt to regain his independence.

Now, the long road to recovery continues. While insurance has covered the majority of surgery and other treatment costs thus far, the remaining time we have approved under insurance is very limited. In order to maximize his recovery, we are asking for your help to cover a portion of the forthcoming out-of-pocket rehab costs, which we estimate to be ~$1,000/day. We may periodically revise our fundraising target based on your support and Karl’s progress in therapy.

Karl is a kind, caring person, generous with his time for those who needed it, and one to consistently put others first. Even through this scary experience, he continues to remain cheerful and positive, and we know that his hard-work ethic will lend itself to making strong progress in rehab.

今年の三月に突然、主人が脳卒中で倒れました。最初は命の危険もあり、意識不明の日が続きました。左脳の言語野、右半身を司る部分の脳のダメージが大きく、現在のところ右半身は自分で動かすことができないため、自力で立つことや歩くことができません。重度の失語症で、言語の理解、話すことが困難で、コミュニケーションが満足に取れません。左脳のダメージが大きかったため、左脳の腫れが右脳を圧迫するのを避けるため、左の頭蓋骨を外す手術を受けました。

幸い、意識を取り戻し、リハビリ施設で約二ヶ月リハビリを受けることができました。５０代半ばで脳卒中患者としては若いということもあり、リハビリである程度回復できる可能性があるようですが、医者の見解ではどの程度回復できるかは個人差があり、診断が難しいと言われました。おかげさまで六月の頭蓋骨を戻す手術は成功し、現在のところ、アメリカで言うsub-acute rehabilitation facilityに入院中です。主人が加入していた医療保険でカバーできるのは８月１６日まで、その後は一日590ドルの施設滞在費に加えてリハビリ代を自費で賄わなくてはいけません（一日1000ドルほど）。回復が望める一番の方法は毎日のリハビリです。認知レベルも脳卒中前のレベルではなく、右半身不随のため、できてしまった血栓（両肺、足、腕）の治療を受けながら、医師や看護師の指導の元、リハビリを受ける必要があります。リハビリで満足に回復しない場合は家を車椅子用に改築する必要があります。まだ働き盛りだった主人の収入もなくなり、障害者手当だけでは治療費を賄うことができず、皆さんに治療費の寄付をお願いしている次第です。回復のチャンスをください。どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。
