Support for Kami

Donation protected
Kami 12 y/o started with a migraine and vomiting, and after multiple calls to doctors and local ER trips, she ended up in Shands pediatric ER unit and has been there overnight for days, even undergoing surgery. She has meningitis, orbital cellulitis with tests coming back positive for COVID and MRSA. Kami spent a week in the hospital and now has appointments with specialists out of town, long term medication, and daily needs that are affecting her wellbeing at so young.

In short, we are asking for support to help the family as Brianna, a single mom of two, has missed two weeks of work, and does not have medical coverage that assists with sickness (only accidents) for emergency bills. One medication alone cost $600 upfront.

 Now for the long story…

(As of April 17th) Five days ago Kami checked into Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and was tested for a bunch of different things. She had been having waves of pain every 2 hours, screaming pain. Her PA at TMH sent her home with “monitor for appendicitis.”

Her pain continued. Kami’s eye in the next 24-48 hours started to swell. Her pain continued and Brianna and I made the call to go to Shands as “appendicitis” did nit seem plausible. After a two hour drive and three hour wait, Kami got a CT.

A team of doctors were put on Kami’s case, including an infectious disease specialist. Kami has meningitis that caused orbital cellulitis. The mucus and puss behind her eye and in her brain was positive for Covid even though she tested negative at TMH initially. Almost every pocket of where they were supposed to be air in her brain was filled with puss. We had no idea how she got this.

Below are updates posted on Facebook from Brianna. It has been a changing battle, as one day, she’s getting better but the next day she’s worse. We are currently unsure of how long Kami is going to be in this situation, away from school, and obviously it’s unprecedented.

Bri was in the middle of moving into a larger home for her girls, and is now having to spend money boarding her animals, childcare, expensive hospital food, obviously missing work and care for her other daughter whom I’m taking care of and getting back into school.

We do not pride ourselves in having to write this, but anything for Kami’s sake, helps. She is 12 years old, has a love for animals, tons of friends, and truly loves her Tallahassee community. While she is finally home, on April 19th after a week away, this will only last if she gets the care she needs long term at a very high financial cost. Her health is all we are working at this for.

Thank you for sharing & supporting her.
