There is a list of things I never thought I'd ever have to do in life and this year seems to be determined to make me do them all. Writing the summary of a GofundMe for my brother and his family wasn't even something I'd ever considered and suddenly it's been thrust to the top of that list.
I don't even know what to say or where to start - Justin is a great man . If you know him, he's made you laugh. If you were in need, he'd do whatever was in his power to make sure you no longer were. I'd say his willingness to help those around him better their station in life borders on being an character flaw, but his heart has always been bigger than he'd ever care to admit. Make no mistake - he can be an absolutely stubborn asshole at times, but his work-ethic and commitment to family and friends is unquestionable.
On Tuesday April 21st, Justin endured a fall on a job site from 3 stories up. He was immediately life-flighted to a trauma center where he has been receiving care in the ICU. He has suffered extensive damage to his leg and skull during the fall resulting in a traumatic brain injury, the extent of which we don't fully know. He has appeared to stabilize and is responding to commands and while this is great progress, we are not out of the woodwork, yet. He will require multiple surgeries over the coming days as they continue to evaluate his condition.
If you know Justin, you know he is a self-employed small-business owner that makes his living doing commercial/residential painting. You are also probably aware that he is damn good at it. If you've ever worked in the construction field or even tackled a home project yourself, you know that it's physically demanding work. We don't yet understand how debilitating his injuries will be or what lasting effects this will have on his life. Knowing my brother, being unable to continue his business and work will affect him more than any fall ever could.
I know we're living in unprecedented times and more people are struggling than ever before. Asking for someone to assist financially during our current crisis almost feels silly, and truthfully - I never thought my pride would allow me to start a GoFundMe or ask you for assistance but that's exactly what I'm doing. With so much still unknown, helping Justin's family focus on him and not on how they're going to get by or pay bills cannot be overstated. We don't know how much this all will cost or how much they'll need - I set the donation goal to $10,000 but that's just an arbitrary number I chose.
If you can, please give. Whether that's a few dollars or a positive thought, know that Justin and our family appreciate it.
