Juan was only 21 years old. He was a hard worker and someone we loved deeply. Though he faced personal struggles, he was still our family, and his loss has left us devastated.

This tragedy happened suddenly, and we were not financially prepared for the expenses that come with laying him to rest. We are asking for help to cover funeral and memorial costs so that we can give Juan the dignity and peace he deserves.

On February 14, my stepson was arrested in the city of Louisville, KY on charges that do not reflect the reality of what was happening.

He suffered from mental health problems and received treatment at Seven Counties Services in downtown Louisville. That day he was going through one of his episodes.

He was charged with assault and other charges, and he was also placed with an arrest warrant by ICE. We understand that when someone commits a crime, they must face the consequences. We agree on that.

What we cannot accept is the treatment he received while he was in custody - a treatment that ended up costing him his life.

On Thursday, February 26, while we were waiting for him in court, we received a notification indicating a change in the status of the case of Juan M. Muñoz Penalver, barely 21 years old.

We thought that perhaps he had been transferred to ICE custody, but there was no record of him. Minutes later, his defense lawyer called us to inform us that he had been found dead in his cell. At that time, they didn't give us any explanation.

As the days went by, alarming details have emerged and nothing makes sense.

Authorities say there is an ongoing internal investigation and they cannot give more details. Meanwhile, several media outlets have published the news, but they do not tell the full story.

He arrived in this country in 2024. He was granted a parole for two years, he had a work permit and his residence application was in process after completing his fingerprint appointment.

Miguel - as he liked to be called - was a young worker, with dreams and goals. Yes, he struggled with his mental health, but that didn't take away his value as a human being.

Today we ask for justice. We ask for answers. We ask for transparency.

El 14 de febrero, mi hijastro fue arrestado en la ciudad de Louisville, KY, por cargos que no reflejan la realidad de lo que estaba sucediendo.

Sufría de problemas de salud mental y recibió tratamiento en Seven Counties Services en el centro de Louisville. Ese día estaba pasando por uno de sus episodios.
