Jordan O’Neill, my nephew, has faced an incredibly tough journey over the past few months. Last September, he was hospitalized and diagnosed with 35% heart failure and 80% blockage. The doctors planned to transfer him for open heart surgery, but when they discovered he didn’t qualify for Medicaid at the time, he was sent home and placed on 15 medications, all without insurance. It was a frightening and uncertain time for both of us.

After a long wait, Jordan finally qualified for Medicaid, having lost his job while in the hospital. His first appointment with a cardiologist brought some hope, but also shock—the doctor couldn’t believe surgery hadn’t happened sooner. Now, with Medicaid in place, Jordan is preparing to meet with a surgeon and faces a major operation soon. He hasn’t been able to work since September, and I’ve been helping him as much as I can, but the challenges keep coming.

The funds raised will help cover Jordan’s living expenses while he recovers from surgery, which is expected to take at least three months, possibly longer because he is diabetic. He also needs help with transportation to appointments, and may require in-home assistance during recovery. Managing a strict diet on food stamps is difficult, especially with rising costs. Any support for Jordan during this difficult time would mean the world to us. I’ve loved him like my own since the day he was born, and I’m doing everything I can to help, but we could use a little extra help from our community.
