Dear family, friends, and community,
After a courageous battle with stage four breast cancer, Jewel L. Harrison passed away at the age of 73. Despite enduring multiple procedures including but not limited to: radiation treatments, chemotherapy, and a mastectomy, she ultimately succumbed to this aggressive disease.
Jewel is survived by her two sons; Richard and Aubree Marshall, and beloved grandson: Liam Marshall. She was a devoted mother, sister, community member, and a cherished member of her family.
She lived a simple, hardworking life, taking care of family and friends alike. Jewel spent as much time as possible bonding with her grandson, and the rest of her free time was spent enjoying weekday evening television shows with Richard, Liam’s father.
Jewel also had a fierce and vibrant spirit. For a period of time, she worked at the Prudential Center where she was able to witness countless live performances.
She loved old soul music, RnB, and Gospel music and treasured the lifelong friendships she cultivated over her life. As a leader and community member, more than anything, she cherished the power of family that permeates the culture of Newark and beyond.
In her final years, her son Richard “Rich Nyce”, former Director of Program Operations, Marketing, Community Outreach at Newark School of the Arts (NSA), became her primary caregiver. With the support of his brother and family, Richard dedicated himself to Jewel’s care, forming a deep bond as mother and son; a bond they weren’t able to relish fully until most recently.
As her health declined, the emotional and financial toll grew, and now, the family faces the unfathomable burden of funeral expenses. With the additional encumbrance of the NSA layoffs, we are asking for your support during this difficult time.
The responsibility of burying Jewel sits primarily in Richard’s hands, and without the assistance of our community, it won’t be feasible.
Your donations will help cover funeral costs, outstanding medical expenses, and provide relief for Jewel’s surviving family.
Jewel will be deeply missed.
Thank you for helping us honor her memory with love, dignity, and compassion.
