As some of you may know, on October 12, 2019 Jennifer suffered a stroke that has left her unable to work for at least 6 months as she faces a long road to recovery. She will need months of rehabilitation to, hopefully, regain full function. Her husband, Jose, is by her side at the hospital and thus, missing work at both of his jobs as well. Every dollar raised will go directly to the Grijalva’s and Jennifer’s recovery.
Jennifer is a coworker and friend of mine at a restaurant in Charlotte, NC. When our work family found out about this, we were all shocked because mere hours before they were both hard at work and making us laugh as they always do.
I had the privilege of visiting them today at the hospital and, honestly, had no idea what to expect. It was amazing to see her awake, alert, and smiling (of course she was, because that’s just Jennifer )!! While she is fully aware of everything going on around her, she isn’t able to communicate normally. She is struggling to find words that came so easily to her 4 short days ago.
I have never met anyone more excited to put a smile on another person’s face than Jennifer. Whether it be a guest celebrating a special occasion at our restaurant or a coworker who just needed a little comfort after a tough day, Jennifer is the first in line to support and love everyone around her.
I can honestly say, that I have never met a more hardworking and humble family as the Grijalva’s. Jose has been with our restaurant for well more than a decade and we were lucky to have Jennifer join our ranks in 2017. Family is always first for them and that is evident in their 2 amazing sons (and 2 of the cutest puppies I’ve ever seen).
As I spoke to them today about starting a GoFundMe to aid them in their time of need, I could tell it was something they never would have done on their own because it isn’t in their nature to ask for help, rather they are always the first to help others. Which is precisely why as a work family we wanted to do anything in our power to ease any burden they may face as she recovers.
I’ll conclude with the first thought I had as I left the hospital: If you want to see what REAL love looks like, look no further than Jose and Jennifer.
Thank you and God Bless you all!
