I am currently facing a difficult journey with CLL leukemia, which has brought a host of other health challenges into my life. Alongside leukemia, I am dealing with frequent infections, heart arrhythmia, blood issues, and the ongoing need for pain management. Each month, I see multiple specialty doctors, and the costs of these visits, along with medications and treatments, are becoming more than I can manage. Even with insurance, the out-of-pocket expenses add up to hundreds of dollars every month, and my insurance often does not cover the care I need.
For years, I have dedicated myself to helping my community. I was honored with the Northwestern Ohio Placement Association award by John Glenn for my work with individuals with disabilities in 1990. I spent 30 years serving on Pilgrim Church's board, supporting programs like Feed My Neighbor, clothing drives, and youth outreach. I helped organize the first six years of Bike-a-Thons for the MS Society, and as a member of the Black Swamp Ghostbusters, I continue to raise funds for the MS Society and other local causes. Through prop auctions with the cast and crew of Smallville, I helped raise significant support for the Alzheimer's Society. My volunteer work has also included the Hungry Heifer programs, Disability Center training, and supporting many other organizations over the years.
I also worked with NASA's Teacher in Space program, lecturing for over 20 years on meteorites, aviation, rocketry, and the Young Eagles program—taking hundreds of kids up for their first airplane rides.
The rising cost of living and medical care has made it nearly impossible to keep up. I have been liquidating my collections and personal belongings just to cover the basics, but I am running out of things to sell and options to explore. My immune system is severely compromised, which means emergencies and unexpected expenses are happening more often. The stress of trying to figure out how to pay for everything is almost as overwhelming as the physical symptoms themselves. I am now hoping that, after years of giving back, I can find support from my community to help me get by during this difficult time. Any help you can offer would mean the world to me.
