I’m allowed to share this with you, with my brother’s awareness and permission.
We are grieving an unimaginable loss: our baby boy, Javier Milo.
On September 13th at 8:00pm, my brother got a phone call from his two boys, Juan and Javier (Milo). They were panicked, frantic, and afraid because they were being aggressively chased by a man. My brother immediately jumped in his car to go to his children’s aid, in fear for their safety. My brother tried to make it to Starbucks on 16th Street and 4th Avenue, but by the time my brother arrived, one of his children would be fatally injured, and the other was detained.
When on scene, my brother was informed that Javier was critically injured while simultaneously being denied the ability to see, care for, and be there for his own son. To the extent that he was threatened with arrest if he attempted to ride in the ambulance with Javier to the hospital, who was a MINOR.
At the hospital, my brother, again was not allowed to accompany Javier. He was denied all access to his son who then shortly passed away within the hour of the incident. Javier was treated as evidence, not as a human being.
We have received messages and witness videos identifying the 36-year-old man who assaulted the brothers , yet Juan who is also a victim was the only one detained. We do not wish to seek violence. All we want is to seek clarity and justice. We need more information than “your son is dead; you may get details by Tuesday” or “you may see a body by Friday.” The conduct we’ve observed from the YPD has shown no empathy, compassion, or professionalism.
We want the responsible party held accountable. The attacker followed, intimidated, and assaulted two teens over a traffic incident. In court, Juan was told he was not a victim or victim representative and on social media we were notified of his conviction. It feels like a slap to all families who lose loved ones to senseless violence. Both adults in the incident walked away; Juan remained detained (and bail information is pending).
There has been zero consistent follow-up from the police or the detective assigned to this case. Several witnesses have come forward but were denied the opportunity to share what they saw. We are lost.
We are asking for the community’s help: if you have any information, guidance, or advice, please reach out. People who knew the boys have reached out to offer statements and/or donations. If you would like to contribute to funeral costs and/or attorney fees, please donate here. All proceeds go to the family.
Most of all, we ask for light to be shed on this case and a full, transparent investigation—without premature charges that erase a victim’s father’s right to be there for their own child. We want accountability for all parties involved.
