Support for Jamie, His Care and Family

Donation protected
Hi,

I am starting this fundraiser to support my brother, his recovery, and future care. At midnight on Sunday, 20th April in a mental health crisis, Jamie set himself on fire in York city centre. At present, he is in Pinderfields specialist intensive care burns unit in a critical condition. He is in an induced coma and on life support whilst the doctors focus on treating the burns he suffered, which are considered 4th degree and cover 60% of his upper body. His chances of survival are slim, however if he does pull through, he is facing months in hospital recovery and years of physical rehabilitation including endless surgeries as a starting point afterwards.

Whilst there is huge uncertainty around his future and we are struggling at the moment to look forward, what I do know is this is life altering injury and if there is any hope at all for him to recover both physically and mentally, it is likely to come at a huge cost. I am confident that he is in the best possible place right now, but there is every chance in future we will need to provide far more support than we or the care service can provide without the financial means to do so.

Jamie has suffered for a long time with complex mental health difficulties and the lack of care and negligence from the mental health services in the last few years has now irrevocably damaged what life he has. I have no faith in their ability after this to appropriately provide the care he will need to mitigate the psychological, as well as physical, damage and this will be another huge hurdle to face in recovery.

I am trying my best to take a pragmatic approach and ease any extra stress for us as his family in the future and make sure that regardless of the outcome, we have the support necessary to cover costs, whether it's for his ongoing care, or the very real possibility of funeral costs.

If there comes any point where there is no use for the funds raised directly, they will be donated to burn survivor charities in the hopes that they are able to provide support to others who are affected by such a traumatic injury.

Any donation, regardless of the amount, is hugely appreciated and we are eternally grateful to the members of the public who helped, the responding services, and the medical staff providing him with the care he desperately needs right now.
