Support for Hwanhee Kim & father, Jong Chul Kim

Hello, my name is Michelle and I am asking for your support on the behalf of a dear friend.

Hwanhee is a very hardworking, kind and talented young woman. She just graduated high school and should be living the time of her life. But as we all know, these are some unprecedented and uncertain times. Unprecedented and uncertain indeed.

On July 6th, Hwanhee was practicing for her driver’s license exam with her father in the passenger seat. Unfortunately, the steering failed while on the freeway and in order to keep his daughter safe, Mr. Kim instinctually pulled the steering wheel towards himself. From what I was able to gather, he has injuries to 2 lumbar vertebrae, 4 fractured ribs, a dislocated shoulder and a broken leg. He is alone at the hospital and will be going into surgery on Tuesday to insert a screw into his shoulder and leg, followed by intensive rehab. There are some complications with insurance and his medical expenses potentially will NOT be covered. Meanwhile, Hwanhee has fractured 2 ribs and her sternum, and received surgery for a ruptured spleen.

As we may all know and have at some point experienced, medical expenses in the US are back breaking, whether you’re insured or not. On top of that, due to the injuries that Mr.Kim has sustained and the rehab that will follow, he not be able to return to work. He is a very skilled engineer and helps many people with handyman work. However, this work is strenuous and difficult even for the able. He likely will not be able to return to work for several months.

It would be nice if bills would understand that times are tough. But…

Monthly rent is still $1350. There are utilities aside from water. Phone bill. Food. Gas. Etc.

Hwanhee works a part time job at a cute café, but business hours are reduced due to COVID. And frankly the earnings won’t be anywhere near what needs to be covered, even if she were able return to work immediately. I saw her today and she could barely sit up from her bed. You won’t see her running around there for at least another month.

Hwanhee is always smiling and lifting up those around her. If you haven’t met this sweet girl yet let me help you picture what she is like. She was probably in 7th or 8th grade and was sitting on the floor braiding her friend’s hair. She saw me sweating from the other side of the room and offered to braid mine too. I have no recollection of interacting with her prior to this. When the rest of the kids are going home, Hwanhee stood in the church parking lot, repainting some old Korean drums, not just once but for weeks.

Hwanhee is patient, she is kind, and she is selfless.

If you haven’t met her yet, I hope you get the chance to love her one day. If you are lucky enough to already know Hwanhee, let us show her how much is loved.

Oh, and I must mention that THIS GIRL can SING and DANCE. With time she’ll be back to doing all the things she loves, but in the meantime lets help her manage this adult stuff just a bit.

If you would like to help Hwanhee more directly and avoid the fees, her Venmo is @HwanHee-Kim-10356.
