Five months ago, my husband started feeling dizzy and experiencing double vision. We went to the emergency room, but they couldn’t find anything and told us to follow up with his primary doctor. From there, he was referred to an ear, nose, and throat specialist and a neurologist. The dizziness doctor noticed some concerning symptoms with his eye movements and MRI scans. She took our case seriously, even presenting it at a medical conference to get more opinions. Just after Thanksgiving, his symptoms worsened—he began vomiting uncontrollably, and within six weeks, a tumor had formed and grown to 10mm. He was transferred by ambulance to a hospital 2.5 hours away, where he spent weeks undergoing scans, tests, a lumbar puncture, and a bone marrow biopsy, all without a clear diagnosis. As his brain began to swell, he was started on steroids and allowed to come home for Christmas, but he could not walk without help, was dizzy, and had paralysis on his right side. After another MRI, we learned the tumor had grown even while on steroids, and a brain biopsy was scheduled. Today, we finally received the diagnosis: brain cancer. He has not been able to drive, work, or do anything by himself. He has no formal insurance and relies on veteran affairs, which only covers part of his medical bills and procedures, and only if they are associated with veteran programs. We are facing significant expenses for travel, hotels, and lodging while he undergoes treatment, as well as medical bills and other costs the VA doesn’t cover. On top of that, neither of us can work right now—I had to take medical leave to care for him—so we are struggling to cover our rent, utilities, and basic living expenses. This is going to be a long journey of recovery. He is now starting chemotherapy, physical, occupational, and speech therapies, with doctors estimating at least four more months of intensive treatment ahead, and no real assurance of it working. We are reaching out for help because we simply can’t do this alone. Any support, whether it’s a donation or sharing our story, would mean the world to us. Thank you to everyone who can help in any way. We love you all.
