My land mates and my home and farm in Jackson County, KY was hit by a flash flood, on June 26, 2026.
We survived the flood without damage to our cabin and yurt, where two of us stay (and two 5-year-olds 50% of the time). The camper I have lived in for the last two years was flooded, both the interior of the camper and under the hood of the camper (where the engine, etc is). Currently we are still working to see if the engine can be started again, but at the moment we are unable to move it to another location where it can better dry out. Additionally, the internal "living space" portion of the camper is currently uninhabitable. The flood has left it damp and musty, even after thoroughly cleaning the floors, cabinets, ripping out most of the carpet that was holding water and running a dehumidifier and fan for 10 days. Mold can be smelled from outside.
I have not been holding insurance for the camper as I don't drive it off the property. It is not eligible for any fund relief programs that I am aware of.
Other parts of the property were also affected, including our subsistence garden. We have not been able to harvest from it since the flood. This has made an impact to the amount and quality of fresh produce we have access to. We are in the process of getting soil samples tested to see what contaminants are present in the garden post-flood. Our property borders a two-lane highway, and one of the many notable debris that this flood moved through the land was our neighbor's propane tanks. That being said, it is almost certain that we will be dealing with some amount of contamination. Our recent onion and garlic harvest was washed away, and the bridge we share with a neighbor to access our property was washed out. The county has installed a temporary bridge and submitted a claim to FEMA for a permanent one.
I have decided to crowdfund to help secure future housing for my partner and me, who currently lives in the cabin on our land. The camper was my primary home and it is unclear when or if ever it will be habitable again.
It has been challenging for us to find safe, affordable housing on this property in general, and this hit feels like a major setback from achieving what we need to have real housing security. Everyone on the land is affected by this loss. Even though the cabin wasn't flooded, the floodwater was past the bottom step leading up to the cabin. The cabin itself is set on cinderblocks and not secured to the ground. This flood has made it extremely apparent that although this housing unit is a place to live now, it is not a long-term housing option. The result of my not having secure housing means I will be spending more time in the other housing units, further compounding our already limited access to indoor space. Being able to supplement the purchase of a new-to-me camper will improve all of our quality of life and make the bounce-back from this flood exponentially easier. We will be able to park this camper on higher ground on the property, far above the floodplain.
All of us appreciate your support. If you can't donate at this time, know we feel your encouragement!
