Support for HLHS Heart Surgeries for Annabel & Justin’s Baby

Hi, I’m Chelsea, Annabel & Justin’s sister-in-law. A few weeks ago, Annabel & Justin went to a check-up at the doctor to see their 20-week baby via ultrasound and learned some unfortunate news. Their baby boy, who is due on July 11, was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Fortunately, he is growing well otherwise and on track with everything else. But with HLHS, the treatment involves three open-heart surgeries within the first few years of his life. The first surgery will be performed within the first 2 weeks of his life and the second at 6 months. With the surgery going well, as planned, he will be in the NICU for 6-8 weeks, but it has the potential to be longer.

Thankfully, they have insurance. However, there are so many other costs that go along with this other than what insurance covers. They have an 8-year-old and a 1-year-old at home, too. One of them will have to stay at the hospital 24 hours, and the other will have to travel back and forth (over an hour) between their home and the hospital every day.

Now, not only do they have to traverse the difficult path of a baby with HLHS, but they must also be there for their other children, work, bills, and life in general. Life doesn’t pause because something happens… but I know people can come together and help each other in their moments of need. And that’s pretty amazing.
