I’m writing this on behalf of my dear friend Melissa and her beloved dog, Henry. Henry is only eight years old and has been diagnosed with end-stage congestive heart failure.

Last week, Henry suddenly collapsed while playing at home. His gums turned white, and he was struggling to breathe. Melissa rushed him to the emergency vet, where doctors found fluid around his heart and lungs, and in abdomen. She was told to call family to say goodbye because Henry most likely would not make it through the night.

Miraculously, Henry pulled through and came home after another night in the ICU. Despite everything, he’s still giving high-fives for treats, napping on the couch, and barking at squirrels. Every extra day with him feels like a gift.

As Melissa faces her own complex health issues and is unable to work, Henry has never left her side. Now she’s doing everything she can to return that same love and comfort to him.

This was Henry’s third emergency hospitalization since his diagnosis in August. The mounting bills for his ER stays, medications, and cardiology visits have become overwhelming as Melissa has been out of work since early 2023.

Melissa wants nothing more than to make Henry’s remaining time comfortable and full of love without the constant fear of how to afford his care. So far, his medical care has cost nearly $25,000. While insurance has helped cover some of these costs, it isn’t nearly enough. Henry will also continue to see a cardiologist regularly which unfortunately means Melissa will need to find a way to pay new bills in addition to the ones she already has.
