The Belthoff Family: Jason, Heather and their 13-month-old son Oliver are loved by so many friends and family. We are organizing this fundraiser to support Heather during an unimaginable time.
Jason, one of the healthiest 35 year olds you'll ever meet, went out for a morning run on February 10th near Little Italy, San Diego, as he had done so many times before, when he suddenly collapsed. Emergency response teams were able to revive and resuscitate him on scene but a lot of time passed before they were able to get to him. He was stabilized while the medical teams at Scripps investigated what happened. They suspect a cardiac arrhythmia led to the event, but it’s difficult to know for certain. Jason fought hard over the next 48 hours and received the very best care and efforts by the ICU team at Scripps. His family was at bedside continuously, but despite best hope and prayers, his condition worsened. Jason was without blood flow and oxygen for a significant period of time during the initial event.
On February 12th, family met with all of the medical teams, including neurologists and cardiology consultants. Heather received the devastating news: Jason had suffered severe neurological injury that could not be reversed. A small silver lining remains —because of Jason’s age and impeccable health, he is able to provide the incredible gift of life to others through organ donation, so that he may live on through others. A true reflection of his selfless character.
On top of the emotional shock and burden Heather is carrying, there are upcoming medical expenses for Jason’s ICU stay, anticipated end-of-life costs for funeral arrangements, and the reality of childcare support for Oliver. It is Heather and Jason's dream for Oliver to grow up here in San Diego and give him the best life possible. Jason was extremely social and friendly—the glue within so many friend groups.
With this difficult journey ahead, any generous support to Heather and little Oliver would be received with immeasurable gratitude.
