It is with heavy hearts that we ask for your help to support our fellow Haitian citizens right now. Many lives are on the line after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, and multiple aftershocks struck southern Haiti on Saturday August 14th, 2021.
Haiti has suffered for decades because of its geographic location and a history of political uncertainty. In recent years, Haitians have endured food scarcity, gang violence, kidnappings, rising COVID cases, the 2010 earthquake and just last month the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Now another deadly earthquake in the south part of the country has killed over 1,900 people, injured over 9,000, and left over 30,000 homeless. Moreover, they are expected to get hit by multiple tropical storms. These poor Haitians are in desperate needs of food, water, clothing, air mattress, cots, tents, tarps, first aid kits and money. At this moment a lot of people in southern Haiti are sleeping in the street and in soccer fields without shelter.
We often ask ourselves why so many disasters happen during a short period of time with no time to recover. One thing we know for certain is that we can’t stand by and watch them suffer alone. A Haitian proverb says “Men anpil chay pa lou”, which means, “many hands make the load lighter.” We need your help to lighten the load for people who are suffering.
We are a group of Haitians mostly from the southern part of Haiti and living in Appleton, Wisconsin. We created a group called Support for Haiti (SFH) to provide direct assistance to Haitians affected by the earthquake. We are in regular communication with trusted Haitian teams that are helping to identify individual, family, and community in needs. We plan to transfer money directly to those individuals from a joint bank account we have established. We ask for monetary donations, small or big, and any amount will help tremendously.
Right now, there is no good way to transport supplies to some of the areas affected by the earthquake because some of the roads are damaged by landslides. Money is easier to transfer to these people to buy what they need. Donations are not tax deductible as we are not yet a registered non-profit organization. Your monetary gift will support Haitian-led solutions and will go straight to the people that are most impacted by the earthquake.
Your gift will make a big impact and could potentially save lives. This is the time to show our Haitian brothers and sisters, love, support, and trust. We have faith in you to support the cause.
There are a few ways to contribute:
1 - The fastest way with no fees taken out is to give cash or write a check directly to one of the Support for Haiti founders (names below.) You can also make a bank to bank transfer (email us at [email redacted] for further instructions about this option).
2 – We have set up a GoFundMe, which transfers contributions as you make them and takes 2-3 days to arrive in our bank account. This is the next best way. The GoFundMe fee is 2.9% + $0.30 gofundme.com/f/support-for-haiti-earthquake-relief
3 – The third option is to give through Facebook. Though the fee is slightly lower (2.60% + $0.30) Facebook processes payments only once per week on Wednesdays and they take a while to get started. https://tinyurl.com/Supportforhaiti
We value transparency and accountability and are happy to answer any questions you might have about our approach. It is based on our shared love for the people of our country and our faith in each other.
Thank you so much for your support.
