He was predeceased by his father, Walter Benjamin Nichols; mother, Patsy Pardue Short; grandparents, L.B. and Thelma Averitt Nichols, and Doyle and Viola Lee Pardue; his sister, Vicky Lalena Russell; nephew, Nicholas Lalena; and his uncles, Doug Nichols and Corky Mode, aunts Elaine Sessions (J.R.) and Shirley Longino (Merse) and first cousins Aliene Sessions McCoy, Johnny Longino and Earnest Mode.

Gregg is also survived by his stepmother, Irene Nichols, and half-sister, Jennifer Nichols of Coushatta, Louisiana; and stepsiblings, Debra Lindsey (Wulfie), Wiley Lindsey (Melanie), Clifton Lindsey (Lori) of Bossier Parish, and sister-n-law Gail Allen and brother-n-law Gary Gritsko of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Other survivors include his aunts Robbie Mode and Etoise Nichols, and niece, Amber Lalena (Brandon), and great-nephews, Hunter Brooks (Jamie and their children Parker and Tucker), Nicholas Claycomb, and Caleb Lalena. Additionally, he leaves behind a large extended family of first cousins: Mark Longino, Christy Gay, Robin Nichols-Meshelle, Rhonda Nunley and Rebecca Holzer; and step nieces and nephews: Ashley Stephenson, Megan Huddleston, Tyler Lindsey, Cameron Lindsey, Katlin Lindsey, Eric Lindsey, Rachel Lindsey, Carly Lindsey, Sara Peck, Nicole Nichols, Madison Nelson, and Brandon Nelson, and their families.
Gregg attended Caddo Parish Schools and graduated from Byrd High School in 1975. During his childhood and teenage years, he shared a pew with his family at Morningside Baptist Church in Shreveport, where he was baptized and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.
A resident of Arlington, Texas, for over forty years, Gregg was a loyal sports enthusiast and a longtime fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. He also enjoyed the fun and excitement of motorsports and automotive entertainment, especially events held at the Texas Motor Speedway. His career journey was diverse, starting from helping his father's land surveying crew as a teenager to various roles in truck driving, foundation repair, freight distribution, on-site paper shredding, public works, and construction cleanup.
Gregg was a self-taught and talented musician with a remarkable ear for music. His passion for music started at an early age. He mastered the drums, guitar, and harmonica. He was also a strong vocalist. Over the years, he played in various bands alongside his best and forever friend, Ronnie Rambin. Gregg's large collection of music spanned all genres, reflecting his broad appreciation for the art form and his talent in creating and performing diverse musical styles.
Gregg was able to keep cancer at bay for ten years. It reemerged in 2024. With this challenge he remained hopeful, finding solace in his faith. Even on his darkest days, he felt the Light of his Savior shining upon him. For this, we are eternally grateful and take comfort in knowing that Gregg now rests in peace.
Graveside services are pending and will be held in Shreveport, Louisiana at Forest Park West Cemetery. Family and friends wanting to honor his memory may do so by supporting local musicians, performing random acts of kindness, and cheering on his favorite teams, the Cowboys, and the Rangers.
