Kyla and George Hicks Compassionate Fund
I've known George for 26 years and felt like I'd known Kyla all my life on the day I met her! With their permission, this fundraising campaign is to support them over the next 6 months as they deal with Kyla's cancer journey and George's undiagnosed neurological condition.
Kyla was first diagnosed with cancer (multiple myeloma) 6 years ago when she broke her neck. After a lengthy battle of radiation, chemotherapy, and a stem cell transplant, she successfully put it into remission. Years of rehabilitation allowed her to return to a mostly normal life. However, six months ago the cancer was confirmed to have returned and she is battling again to get rid of a tumor and return the cancer to remission. This has involved radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. She is also working towards getting healthy enough for a second stem cell transplant.
As Kyla's sole care-giver, George has been an amazing support to her, but 3 years ago he began to develop sleep problems which eventually made it impossible for him to work. His doctor would not put him on disability while he's trying to recuperate, so George has now gone 2 years almost entirely without sleep and work. In mid-June 2019, George experienced 3 seizures in a single day. Doctors cannot yet explain this. His memory of that day and over a week following has not yet returned. As a result, doctors have put him on significant restrictions, including removing his driving license, until they can confirm he will not experience another seizure.
This has put an incredible financial strain on them and additional stress that makes their illnesses worse. With Kyla going on EI for her current treatment period, this means they are surviving on only half of her part-time salary.
Funds raised here will go towards helping Kyla and George meet expenses on their medical journeys, beating Kyla's cancer and hopefully finding the cause and solution to George's issues.
I am so impressed by Kyla's positivity, hard work, kindness, patience and wisdom since her first diagnosis, and I'm equally in awe of George's intense support of Kyla, his incredible work ethic, and his patience and perseverance in dealing with his own sleep deprivation issues, and now the seizures. I feel like if I had to deal with what they've been dealing with, I would be an incoherent and pathetic puddle of jelly on the floor. When beloved friends are going through such hardships, it's distressing to feel powerless to help. If you can afford to contribute in this very practical way that would be tremendous.
Many many thanks for your generosity! - Claire Fogal
