On May 5, 2025 just one year after his life saving Quadruple Bypass my father faced an Emergent Lower Extremity Amputation due to Critical Limb Ischemia.
Life will never be the same for the man who has always done everything for himself.
My father has always been the backbone of our family, selflessly supporting us and others while often neglecting his own needs.
In May 2024, he underwent open heart surgery which included a quadruple bypass, and mechanical aortic valve replacement. That was an incredibly challenging time for our family. Nevertheless, he persevered and continued to work and support his family. Looking back, that was a piece of cake compared to what was to come.
Later that year, in December 2024, he was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure and Severe Mitral Valve Regurgitation. He began receiving hemodialysis. We spent several months traveling 45 minutes one way and 40 miles per day, 4 days a week for Dialysis. My father went from a completely independent person to spending 5 hours a day in a chair while receiving hemodialysis. Things started to look up when we were able to start hemodialysis treatments at home. This treatment, while necessary and life sustaining led to further complications, including anemia; requiring multiple blood transfusions and eventually and most recently Critical Limb Ischemia.
My father spent Christmas Eve and Christmas morning in the emergency room receiving blood to supply oxygen to his vital organs. At the time of his End Stage Renal diagnosis, it was also determined that he had severe mitral valve regurgitation which causes a backflow of blood into the left atrium causing severe pulmonary symptoms, including pulmonary edema and congestion of the lungs. It was decided that surgeons would be unable to proceed as he was too medically fragile and unstable.
In March, on his birthday, after receiving a hemodialysis treatment he passed out and was rushed to the hospital where the found his hemoglobin to be critically low requiring multiple blood transfusions. Despite all of this he pressed on never showing anything other than how strong he truly is.
On May 5 just one year after his life saving Quadruple Bypass my father faced an emergent lower extremity amputation due to Critical Limb Ischemia. This has been a life-altering event for him and our family. Doctors attempted every limb salvage technique known to man, unfortunately there were no other options, and amputation was the only option left to preserve the remaining healthy tissue and to take away the excruciating pain. We are now seeking support to cover the costs of a prosthesis, necessary home modifications to accommodate his new needs, ongoing medical bills, and prescriptions. These changes are crucial for his recovery and to help him regain some independence.
Surgeons are also adamant that his Left leg is near amputation as well, but feel he has some time, it could be a matter of weeks to months. We need to rehab him as quickly as possible before this happens.
Despite these challenges, my father's spirit remains strong. He has always been a giver, and continues to give. Now, in his time of need, we are reaching out for help. Your support will make a significant difference in his journey towards recovery and adapting to this new chapter in his life. My mother is unable to work as she is his caregiver, as well I am a Registered Nurse who has had to cut back on my hours and work weekends only in order to support our ever changing needs. My father cannot be left alone.
Prior to this above the knee amputation, we have learned that navigating our home is impossible with a wheelchair and even a walker. It is likely that our hallways and bathroom, at the very least will need to be modified and or extended. As well, exterior access is a major challenge. We have unfortunately exhausted all of our financial resources this past year.
To say my Father has been a warrior and the bravest person I have ever met would be an UNDERSTATEMENT. Fearlessly going through one major high risk surgery after another, and putting on a brave face everytime, never showing an ounce of fear.
