Support for family escaping domestic violence

1 in 4 women have been victims of severe domestic violence in their lifetime. That means it’s very likely you, or someone you love, could be one of those women.

Our dear friend (who is also a daughter, granddaughter, big sister, niece, cousin, and new mom…but must remain anonymous to protect her safety) was taking all of the right steps in planning to escape an abusive relationship that she fell into while still in high school. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to get away in time and is now a survivor of severe domestic violence.

Thanks to her bravery, courage and strength, she managed to escape before her life was taken from her. The suffering and violent abuse she has endured is more than most people could bear. What he did to her is beyond abuse, it was attempted murder. Her tiny frame battered and bruised all over, eyes swollen shut for days, bloodstained tears pour down her face, gashes all across her face and body (some he tried to stitch up himself with a sewing needle), toes bleeding from where he tried to cut them off, her head swollen to twice it’s size, chunks of hair missing with what remains tangled into a mat

In addition to the physical healing journey ahead of her, she is also facing a long journey of emotional healing. He took every dollar she had saved and she is currently not physically or mentally able to work. Her family is also needing to take time away from work in order to help care for her and keep her and themselves safe. So far, police have been unsuccessful in catching him and he remains on the run, while her family, including her younger siblings, have to remain in hiding to keep safe.

We, her friends, are asking for your support to help her and her baby get back on their feet. After going through the unthinkable, the last thing her or her family need to worry about is money. Any money raised will be used towards keeping them safe, meeting their basic needs, and providing mental health supports and anything else needed to get them through this difficult journey towards healing and starting a new life.

Fleeing from an abusive relationship certainly isn’t easy, and the abuse, suffering and pain she has faced is more than anyone should have to endure. While she is thankfully surrounded by a loving and supportive family, we want to do everything we can to help ensure she has what she needs to get through this and rebuild her life. It is our hope that down the road, she’ll also be able to attend post-secondary, and do all the other things she never got to do these past few years of her adolescent life.
