A mother fighting leukemia.
Three young daughters waiting for her to come home.
A family that has already lost one child to the same disease.
Eduardo, Sonia’s brother, is a devoted husband and father raising three girls—ages 2, 10, and 13. His wife, Patricia, is now battling leukemia.
Their family lives together in Argentina in a small one-room home where space is limited and privacy is scarce. Patricia’s illness has deeply affected their financial situation and contributed to these difficult living conditions. For years, they worked side by side sewing clothes for local companies to support their family. But recent changes in government import laws forced many of those businesses to close, and the work they relied on disappeared almost overnight.
Now, their lives revolve around hospital visits.
Almost every day, Eduardo and Patricia travel for hours by public transportation—through heat, rain, and exhaustion—to reach the hospital for her chemotherapy treatments. They are currently waiting for government approval for a medication (Blinatumomab) that could prepare Patricia for a life-saving transplant if the treatment is successful. Until that approval comes, doctors must determine whether she can continue chemotherapy despite the high risks.
While they are away at the hospital, their two older daughters stay home caring for their 2-year-old sister and doing their best to keep the household together by cooking and cleaning.
This family is also carrying a heartbreaking loss: just three years ago, leukemia took the life of their eldest daughter.
Today, Eduardo and Patricia are doing everything they can to keep their family going, but the financial burden has become overwhelming. They are struggling to cover basic necessities like food, rent, and transportation to the hospital.
