A group of local moms are coming together to provide emergency food for families living in Corona and Elmhurst, NY.
This part of Queens is known as "the epicenter of the epicenter" and is one of the top 5 areas of NYC that has experienced the most COVID-19 related deaths and illnesses.
We have found a local business willing to host a pop-up food pantry to feed 500 families for 8 weeks (250 families every other week for 4 weeks). Working with local community leaders, we have identified 500 families that have been directly impacted by the virus and will be inviting them to participate in the pantry.
We have identified a wholesale food provider that can feed 500 families for 8 weeks for $144 each family, providing
fresh produce, milk, cereal, rice, pasta, tomato sauce, peanut butter, vegetable oil, lentils, beans and cleaning supplies. As this crisis will continue to impact families for months to come, we are budgeting for 8 weeks of the pantry, for a total of $72,000.
Unfortunately, we are seeing the situation described in this NY Times article about play out anecdotally day after day, and we cannot wait any longer to help our fellow community members.
Thank you so much- we hope you are staying safe and healthy!
