We know Emilia as a bold leader in Minnesota, one who every day puts her values to work for her communities. She has worked tirelessly for Latine youth in our state, for undocumented immigrants, on the drivers licenses campaign, as a moral leader for intersectional values of racial, economic, and gender justice. She is here for all of us and now she needs us.
Last night Emilia had to carry her father into her car and take him to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he is now in the ICU being treated with covid.
Please read her tweet thread about her experience here: https://twitter.com/emiliavalos/status/1328877689869045761?s=20
Emilia's father is a perfect example of the deep contradictions that govern our country--workers deemed "essential" when it comes to working in jobs that feed the rest of us, but non-essential when it comes to receiving the benefits of pay, benefits, and citizenship.
Emilia's friends are hoping we can surround her and her family with love. Her father's recovery will be challenging and he has reached an age where the family knows he should stop working. And they still have no idea how much his medical care will end up costing.
This is such a challenging time for all of us, and so your generosity is deeply appreciated, however little you can help with.
