Help Honor Elke Howard's Memory and Support Her Family

A peaceful afternoon turned tragic when 63-year-old Elke Howard was struck and killed by a drunk driver outside her home. In an instant, a beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbor was taken from the family and community who loved her.

According to investigators, the driver, who admitted to drinking, crossed several lanes of traffic, struck multiple vehicles, then hit Elke before crashing into her apartment building. The driver has been arrested and is being held on a $1 million bail.

Born and raised in Germany, Elke later married an American serviceman and moved to the United States in 1982 to begin a new chapter in her life. For 44 years, Elke built a life, a family, lasting friendships, and a place in the community she proudly called home.

Elke was far more than a victim in a news headline. She was a devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, friend, neighbor, and valued community member. The impact she had on others was evident at her candlelight vigil, where community members gathered to honor her life. She was so respected and cared for that the local Chief of Police attended and spoke about the difference she made in the lives of those around her.

Today, her family is facing an unimaginable loss. Alongside their grief come funeral expenses, legal matters, time away from work, and the many unexpected financial responsibilities that follow a sudden death.

The family must continue paying rent on Elke's apartment while they sort through a lifetime of belongings, clean the apartment, and make final arrangements. Her monthly bills and other obligations do not simply stop because she is gone. These expenses are arriving at the same time the family is trying to process their grief and support one another through this heartbreaking tragedy.

The family also hopes to create a lasting memorial near the apartment building she called home—a place where friends, neighbors, and fellow tenants can gather to reflect, remember, and celebrate the kindness and warmth she shared with so many.

Elke's sons, daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren are carrying a tremendous emotional burden while managing the practical realities of this sudden loss. They are navigating overwhelming grief while trying to handle funeral arrangements, memorial planning, time away from work, and the many unexpected expenses that follow such a sudden tragedy.

If you are able to help, any contribution—regardless of size—is deeply appreciated. Your support will help ease the burden of funeral expenses, apartment and final expenses, memorial costs, and other unexpected needs while allowing the family to focus on healing and honoring Elke's memory.

If you cannot donate, please share this fundraiser with your friends, family, coworkers, and social networks. Spreading the word can make a tremendous difference by helping this campaign reach others who may be able to offer support.

Thank you for honoring Elke's memory and standing beside her family during this incredibly difficult time.
