Support for Dwayne Landry

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

One of our own is in the fight of his life and needs his lacrosse family’s help!  Please join us in helping our friend, Dwayne Landry, who was diagnosed with throat cancer shortly before the Christmas holiday.  What first started as a nagging ear infection in late November became much worse in December, as Dwayne’s lymph node on the right side of his neck became increasingly swollen.  The doctor’s immediately “scoped” Dwayne’s throat and found a tumor.  It had rapidly grown to the point where swallowing had become difficult and there were concerns it could impact his breathing.  Dwayne’s doctors proceeded with surgery on December 9th to remove the tumor.  After tests were run on the tumor, it was revealed to be cancerous. Dwayne was prescribed chemotherapy and radiation in an effort to kill the cancer permanently.  He began radiation and chemotherapy on January 6th and will continue through February 19th, with residual rehab and therapy for 2-3 additional months.  The treatments have clearly taken a toll on Dwayne’s body and his spirit.  He has lost nearly 20 pounds and is expected to lose nearly 25% of his body weight through the process.  The radiation has burned Dwayne’s throat making it nearly impossible to swallow food, and he has completely lost his sense of taste.  As such, a feeding tube has been installed allowing him to get in some of the necessary nutrition until he can begin to eat and swallow again.

THE GOOD NEWS: The doctors are very confident that they caught the cancer early and will be successful in killing all of the cancer cells.  His particular cancer has a very high rate of cure, and Dwayne is expected to make a full recovery.

THE BAD NEWS: This is a VERY EXPENSIVE process, and Dwayne is limited in his ability to work while going through treatment.

For those of us who have gotten to know Dwayne, he loves the game of lacrosse and enjoys watching his son Ethan compete at Cambridge High School and in the summer with Thunder LB3.  He’s been our summer team manager, (we jokingly refer to him the “Team Mom”) faithfully for many seasons.  He’s the guy who sends out our weekend game-day itinerary, hotel and tailgate coordination, and so much more to make the experience fun and simple for the rest of us.  Dwayne’s also the type of guy to make all parents feel included, never wasting an opportunity to engage everyone in conversation.   In fact, many of our lax friends who first learned of Dwayne’s condition were the first ones to offer comfort and support him.  Those of us who love lacrosse are family.  That is part of what makes the game so special!

The purpose of this fund is to support Dwayne and his family as they face the costs incurred from his medical treatment, along with paying for healthy meals that a wonderful “lacrosse family” has been providing at cost for Dwayne (while he could eat), Ann, and Ethan. 100% of the proceeds of this fund will go directly to Dwayne and his family. Any unused proceeds from this fund will be donated to Northside Cancer Institute, who is treating Dwayne and so many others fighting this malicious and indiscriminate disease.  Every donation no matter how big or small is very helpful and greatly appreciated and medical bills are already mounting.  Please join us in supporting Dwayne as he battles this disease!
