Support for Detained Farm Workers and Families
Donation protected
On Monday, May 12, Lorenzo Sarabia was detained after a long day of agricultural work, along with Abraham Mendez Luna and Eleazar Cervantes, while driving back when their vehicles were stopped for specious reasons.
Lorenzo Sarabia is someone who is loved not only by his family but also by his community. After he was unjustly detained, the community rallied behind him to bring him justice and support him and his family in any way they could. Lorenzo became a leader in 2023, where he advocates for farm worker heat, pesticides, and immigrant protections.
Abraham Mendez Luna is a farm worker whose sole aim was to work in the fields of Georgia to provide for his family back in Mexico. Coming into the country under the H-2A Agricultural program, he helped support his wife and children, one of whom is special needs. His wife describes Abraham as a hard worker who is devoted to his family and works to give them a better future. He is also described as a friendly person, always getting along with others, and whose work ethic is second to none, always pushing past obstacles in order to get work done.
Eleazar Cervantes is a 29-year-old farm worker who was working picking blueberries the day he was detained. Originally from the city of Altamirano in Guerrero, Mexico, Eleazar has been working in the United States, more specifically in the state of Georgia, since 2022. Like Abraham, Eleazar is the primary breadwinner for his family and left everything behind to give his family a better life, sending the money he makes back to his family in Mexico. Eleazar has been described as someone who never gives up and always does his work in rain or shine.
We need your help. We feel very hopeful in their cases as the way they were detained was flawed and full of inconsistencies. While we are working to provide any support to them and their legal representatives, we need funds to help their families. Any bit helps.
*From the organizer: I am working closely with Lorenzo Sarabia's family. Even while in detention, Lorenzo is still thinking of others. He wanted to include Abraham and Eleazar in this fundraiser so that his fellow farm workers and their families also have the opportunity to receive assistance.
