Many residents of the Capital District have enjoyed listening to and dancing to the beautiful music of Sonny and Perley Jazz Ensemble. They have graced us with their musical gifts for over four decades, and so many of us know them not just as musicians but as friends. Recently, Perley shared with me that her daughter Desiree, who lives locally with her husband Rok and their three young children, have fallen on extremely challenging times and are in need of help that they are unable to extend themselves.
Desiree has been challenged with a serious illness that has triggered an avalanche of problems—physical, mental, and financial. She and her husband recently lost their small country restaurant due to difficult, unforeseen circumstances. With no savings or recourse, they are struggling to make ends meet. Rok is driving for Uber, but his car is 15 years old, still carries a loan, and is experiencing mechanical difficulties that cost more than the car is worth. Desiree has tried to drive for Uber as well, but her illness has put her in the hospital often. She is trying to manage the needs of her three children, her household, and work when able, but the entire situation has become extremely overwhelming.
Desiree and Rok would never ask for help—that's just who they are. Yet, they have helped so many other people when they had their diner: a free meal to someone whose card was declined, a cup of coffee or meal to someone homeless, and countless other acts of kindness. They've poured into a lot of people, and now it's time for us to pour into them. I started this GoFundMe page because I believe in the power of love, caring, and random acts of kindness. No amount you donate is too small. Even if you can't donate, sharing this link can make a huge difference. Let's come together and make a difference for this struggling family in the name of love and kindness. With warm regards and sincerity, Leslie LaGuardia
