Support for Dee-Jay Shepard

Dee-Jay Shepard. Father, son, brother, mentor, coach, and friend of the community. On April 24th he was seized by a severe stroke that left him incapacitated. Thankfully, an unidentified good Samaritan found him and called the police. A blood clot in his brain had paralyzed the entire right side of his body and took his ability to speak.

Our friend Dee-Jay needs our help.  He is unable to work. While he is unable to fully move or speak at the moment. He is making progress with his rehabilitation but only time will tell. What we do know is that he is stubborn, persistent, strong and that he won’t give up on his long road back to health.  Life may never be the same for him but as his family and friends, we will be there for him every step of the way and help him find his new normal.

Dee-Jay, age 53, has spent a large portion of the past three decades doing a great deal of service for the Cowichan Valley community. Since 1994 when he opened Iguana Cycles and supported countless community events and competitions.  Dee-Jay was never the one to take more then he needed and he always gives more then he has.

He has spent more time and energy helping countless youth, the disadvantaged and financially unable to keep their bikes on the road, and to leave people with peace of mind while supplying the knowledge to do the work for themselves. He has also devoted the past 21 years to voluntarily coaching for the Cowichan Valley Soccer Association. Starting out as a coach for his son's team for the first decade. He then went on to coach a few other teams these past 11 years, as well as the countless Goal keepers he has trained and supported.

More recently, Dee-Jay had started playing with the adult soccer team The Cowichan Steelheads. He has since then become the manager and helped found and manage (a thankless job) the over 40’s Steelheads franchise. (The Steelheads 035 and 040 are considered by most to be the best adult franchise on the planet.) Over this time he has spent thousands of his own dollars to purchase specialty equipment not available through the club while never asking for a single penny in return.

Dee-Jay is the kind of person who shines a light and raises the confidence of the youth, the community and each other. So that we can grow to have the patience, perseverance and over come the obstacles needed to face tough times like the one he is currently in. The least we can do is give back in his time of need.

In conclusion, all we are asking is if you can contribute in any way to help Dee-Jay through this unimaginable time we would be nothing but grateful. Thank you for your time.
