Our Deb: our daughter/daughter in-law, our sister, also a wife, a mother of six, grandmother of two (with another grandbaby due any week now), an aunty, a friend, a tirelessly hard working member of her community,.. and moreover, an incredibly beautiful, courageous, and generous human. Selfless to the core, driven to help others no matter the circumstances (her biggest flaw), now fighting the fight of her life. Please… please help us to now help her!
Deb and her husband Ben are based in East Gippsland and started their first restaurant business there in Eastwood almost three years ago. They were well on their way to building a very successful business when the dreaded "C" word hit (Covid!). After first surviving the impact of the bushfires that almost brought East Gippsland to its knees, Covid dealt a devastating blow to their trade; multiple lockdowns, constantly changing government mandates, shortage of staff, you know the rest. The impact on the whole family has been unmeasurable as they continue to fight tirelessly to keep more than 50 staff employed. All their savings have now been invested in keeping the business afloat and supporting their staff and families.
Just when there was a light at the end of the tunnel, with government mandates easing and capacity limits increasing, Deb was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer (the “C” word again)... triple negative breast cancer, difficult to treat and fast moving. From initial diagnosis last month, things have progressed exponentially. None of us could comprehend the Stage 4 diagnosis that was delivered three weeks ago. It has completely gutted all of us.
Deb has now started an aggressive chemotherapy treatment and has also been given the option of immunotherapy to maximize the chance of a successful outcome. The catch… immunotherapy treatment is not on the PBS, and is extraordinarily costly. We love Deb beyond measure, we are a proud and hard working family, but we know that she can’t do this on her own. Deb needs all of us to help her fight this fight.
Given Deb’s contribution to the community in East Gippsland, and the love and support we know she has because of her hard work, dedication and commitment, we decided to put our heads together in the hope that we could help raise funds to facilitate this treatment.
