Thirty years of holding space for community living and hosting gatherings at the Mountain has taken its toll. Although Daz’l is very active in earning as much income as he can, he needs to turn to us, his community, for support in handling serious medical, dental, and auto issues. Please read the details below, and help as much as you can. And please please spread the word!
Daz'l says: 2019 was an epic year for me as I turned 60. It was the year I really started to feel my age. Having generally been a very healthy person, a number of health concerns needed to be addressed. Multiple urinary tract infections led me to a urologist, who took three months to diagnose me with acute urinary retention due to an inflamed prostate, requiring me to catheterize 4 times a day. The urologist told me I could wash and reuse the catheters, but that wasn’t a good idea given the water quality where I live, so that led to an acute UTI that landed me in the emergency room the day before the fall gathering. There is a treatment for my condition, but not having health insurance precluded that option. For 2020 I’ve signed up for Obamacare so we'll see where that road takes me in dealing with this.
That health issue caused me to suffer an inguinal hernia from straining to pee. The hernia doctor said it’s very minor, thankfully, but he can't treat it till I take care of the UT issues. Uggh. The doctor visits left me with over $2,500 in unpaid medical bills.
In addition, many years of not being able to afford to see a dentist has left me with a mouthful of problems. Three cracked teeth, and three missing ones. I am looking at over $5,000 of dental work needed. I have two teeth causing pain in my mouth, and really can't ignore this problem any longer. I feel like one of those aging people that sits around talking about their health problems!
But wait there's more - it appears that my 16-year-old van is about to have transmission issues which could mean I will need to either repair it or replace it.
Living on the Mountain for 3 decades, it's been easier to care for other people and their needs and issues, and not deal with my own. Now I need to focus on my own healing and well-being. I've had such a reluctance to ask for help, since my whole life I've been strong and could take care of everything that came my way. My New Year’s resolution is “to ask for help,” which is terrifying to me. Here it is. I humbly ask for support from my community.
Financial needs:
Medical expenses $2500 plus
Dental $5000 plus
Auto $2-3000 plus
Loan Repayment $3300
